Steve Murgatroyd – Freefolk

VFX Supervisor

Steve Murgatroyd
Steve Murgatroyd is Freefolk’s Supervisor of Long Form VFX and an Emmy award-winning Flame artist and Supervisor.

Steve has been working in VFX for 25 years, spending 16 of those at Freefolk, creating award-winning work across commercials, film and TV. His passion for VFX work, combined with his dedication, attention to detail and extensive experience as an onset supervisor and flame artist has proved invaluable when leading a team and creating industry-leading effects.

Originally from a fine art background Steve began his career at The Mill on a work placement. Despite having no prior industry experience he was hired as a junior compositor within his first week! After a spell at Das Werk working on ‘Enemy at the Gates’, Steve again found himself back at Millfilm, where he worked on Oscar-winning films such as ‘Gladiator’ (Dir. Ridley Scott) and also ‘’Harry Potter’. In 2001 he took a full-time position as Visual Effects Supervisor, working on the Bond film ‘Die Another Day’, ‘Black Hawk Down’ and Tom Hooper’s ‘Daniel Deronda’, before Millfilm sadly closed it’s doors.

Along with other ex-Millfim creatives, he made the short journey down the street to join Framestore and began work on ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’. There then followed a period at Cinesite working on ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide…’ and ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.

In 2004 he joined the team at Freefolk where he worked with directors such as Guy Manwaring, Simon Ratigan, Ninion Doff and David Wilson. He progressed to Head of 2D in 2014 and was instrumental in the creation of Freefolk’s longform department where he was the lead Supervisor on the Emmy Award Winning, VES and Bafta Nominated series ‘The Alienist’ as well as Bafta Nominated ‘Emerald City’ and Netflix series ‘Cursed’.

Steve is the VFX Supervisor on an upcoming Netflix series due to be released next year, where he is working with a team of familiar faces amongst his colleagues: well-established, award-winning artists who can achieve the high standards that Steve requires of their work.
His technical, creative and hands-on understanding of post-production across multiple disciplines is testament to his position as VFX Supervisor.
