SIGGRAPH 2014 – The Stuff You May Have Missed…

SIGGRAPH’s 41st conference and exhibition took place on August 10-14th 2014 in Vancouver, Canada and showcased the latest and upcoming technologies.

In a pre-event CGW interview*, SIGGRAPH’s 2014 Chair, Dave Shreiner said visitors could expect “a focus on mobile graphics” including “augmented reality, social gaming, and computational photography.” As well as an emphasis on “gaming and real-time graphics”, and the design and physical creation of virtual 3D objects through 3D manufacturing technology.

Highlights of the event

The exhibition certainly delivered with plenty of big industry players showcasing tricks of the trade and exciting, emerging technologies. Highlights included a keynote presentation from Not Impossible Labs co-founder, Elliot Kotech and insights into DreamWork’s next-generation in-house software, Premo, from Frederick Nilsson and Mathew Gong. Also, Disney’s Lewis N. Siegel shared the secrets of their rendering capabilities on hit movie, Frozen.

Mind blowing new technologies

As well as lots of interactive sessions, The Foundry announced the release of its new NUKE range – NUKEX, NUKE 9 and NUKE STUDIO. Also the development of V-Ray for three of their products – V-Ray for MODO, V-Ray for NUKE and V-Ray for KATANA – in collaboration with Chaos Group. MODO and NUKE were unveiled and demonstrated at Chaos Group’s stand at the exhibition.

 AMD, renowned for its professional graphics cards, unveiled its new range for AMD FirePro including AMD FirePro W2100, AMD FirePro W4100, AMD FirePro W5100, and AMD FirePro W7100. And Next Limit, who provides cutting edge simulation technologies such as RealFlow and Maxwell Render, also pulled in the crowds with their latest commodities.

Dave Shreiner said, “This year’s exceptional education, numerous networking opportunities, and mind-blowing technological advances appealed to everyone. SIGGRAPH 2014 offered an incredible exhibition experience, innovative and inspiring content, and celebrated the impact that graphics and technology can have in everyday life.”
