11.00-13.00 : Taming Tigers and Ocean Waves – The visual effects of “Life of Pi” Hans Rijpkema, Rhythm and Hues

If one begins by filming a young actor in a choppy water tank in the middle of a Taiwanese airport, then how can one end up with a movie about an Indian boy and a fierce Bengal tiger stuck together on a lifeboat in the middle of the vast Pacific ocean? This talk will explain that process: from creating the digital creatures (most notably the tiger named Richard Parker) to the digital ocean environments that are characters in their own right. Other topics include the challenges of stereo movie making, international collaboration and cloud computing.
